Briefings from your Local Policing Team

May 6th, 2011

Good afternoon

There's been quite a bit going on, so quite a lengthy report this time!

Crime Trends

Sometime in March, two open barns in a remote field in Hoarwithy were entered, and 10 horse rugs were stolen, along with a tow bar and electrics from an old Landrover.

A 15ft length of steel tubing was stolen from an unoccupied property in Garway on Monday 2nd May around lunchtime - a male was seen to steal the item and was photographed by a member of the public, as a result, a local male has been arrested, and enquiries are ongoing.  A brilliant example of how quick thinking by a member of the public has led to a crime being solved.

Overnight last night, a green Kawasaki was stolen from a farm in Wormbridge. The bike, model no KVS650, was in a locked building, which was in a locked yard. The bike was ridden across two fields.

A fuel bowser on a construction site at Pontrilas was emptied of diesel between Saturday 30th April and Tuesday 3rd May.

Overnight on Tuesday 3rd/Wednesday 4th May, a silver 6'6" x 16' Ifor Williams trailer was stolen from a farm in Longtown, it had been chained to a tractor in a field, and had some scrap inside, which had been thrown out. There is no jockey wheel on the trailer, the chassis is slightly bent, and there is blue piping on the brake lines. It is not roadworthy and there are no lights on it.

Suspicious vehicles

A farmer from Moccas reported that he had been visited by two vehicles on Tuesday 3rd May, the occupants offering to sell power tools and spanners. The first vehicle, which had also called there on Monday, was a white Nissan pick-up, HH*7039, with a young male driver speaking with an Irish accent.

The second vehicle was a red Ford Transit, R*09YJH, with 'S W Tools' written on the side, the male driver said he was from Doncaster, and left a business card.

I have liaised with Trading Standards and they tell me that most of these tools are cheap imports from China, they are often counterfeit or will be unbranded, and will not have been safety tested.  As far as the law goes, anything offered for sale for over £35 must be accompanied by a written contract giving the purchaser 7 days in which to change his/her mind, and ask for their money back. These characters are not in the habit of giving money back guarantees, and if anyone has bought one of these power tools, Trading Standards would be very interested to have a look at it, so please get in touch via the council switchboard on 01432 260000.

Two males in a small dark blue car, possibly a Vauxhall Corsa, called at an address in Clifford on Tuesday 3rd May, around 1pm. One male stayed in the car whilst the other called at the house and stated he had come to read the meter. The occupier was immediately suspicious as the meter had been read just a few days previously, and asked for ID. The male, who initially said he was from npower, the very quickly showed some sort of ID, but was told to leave, which he did, although he walked round to the neighbouring property first.  He is described as about 5'5" tall, white, with short hair and an earring in his left ear. There is no description of the male in the car.

Please be aware of such callers and make sure others in your community are on their guard for similar callers.

Also on Tuesday, around 6.15pm, two males in a red Ford Transit van YT**XTG called at a farm in Grafton asking for scrap and old batteries. The males stated they were from Gloucestershire, were aged between 22 - 25, both with short dark hair and dark complexions. They were described as 'tidy looking' and were very polite and left as soon as the farmer told them he had nothing for them, although he was aware that one of the males was having a good look around whilst he was talking to them.

On Thursday 5th around 12.30pm, a male in a silver VW Passat RG**GUF was spotted rummaging in a skip at an industrial unit in Ramsden Road, Rotherwas. The male was seen to take something and leave, he is described as 6', well built, with short ginger/blonde hair.

Drugs

Colleagues have carried out two successful drug warrants at two addresses on our area recently, one in Much Birch, and one in Little Birch (unrelated incidents)

Persons were arrested in both cases and drugs were seized, enquiries are ongoing.
Both were as a result of information passed from members of the public via crimestoppers. (0800 555 111)
If you have information but wish to remain anonymous, please pass it on via crimestoppers.

That's it for now!
