Briefings from your Local Policing Team

August 9th, 2011

Crime Trends

At around 2am on Saturday 6th August, an old Volvo 8 wheeler lorry J834MDE was stolen from an open barn in a farm at Wormelow.  The owner of the vehicle was alerted to the theft as an alarm sounded in his property when a laser beam across the entrance to the farm was breached, but unfortunately by the time he got outside, he saw it disappearing down the road.  It was a vehicle used for transporting grain around the farm, having been off the road for over 10 years and wouldn't be able to travel very fast. There was about 15 tons of chicken feed on the rear of the vehicle which may have been dumped as the lorry was almost certainly stolen purely for the scrap value.  So, if you see a pile of chicken feed dumped in a layby or similar, please let us know, the feed is traceable back to the farm as samples are kept of each load delivered.

A quantity of diesel was stolen from a tank on a farm in Grafton overnight of 5th/6th August.

Since 1st August, some trailer lights and some ratchets were stolen from a trailer in a field in Peterchurch.

Suspicious vehicles

A white Ford transit van has been in Howton, near Pontrilas, today, 9th August, asking for scrap. The number is EN07VF* which is used by an individual known to us, so keep an eye out for it. There were two occupants, the passenger was described as a male in his early 20's, with an Irish accent, wearing a black vest top. He had dark hair with a ponytail, and sideburns.

Scams

A company telling you that you have something wrong with your computer and that if you give them remotes access to it, they can fix it for you. Initially they state that there is no charge for this. Do not be fooled, this is a scam as previously reported in the briefings.

A recorded message on your telephone telling you that 'their records show that you are entitled to several thousands of pounds compensation, from the car accident that you have been involved in'. Do not contact this company on any of the numbers given, they will be premium rates and will make your phone bill soar. The law of averages will be that most of us will have had some kind of accident in our vehicles in the last year/two years and think that it is a personal message, but don't be scammed.

Automated message again stating that it's BT and they would like you to fill out a questionnaire and if you would like to opt out of this service, press 9. We haven't got all the details for this one yet, but we assume that when you press 9, it connects you to a premium rate number.

101 is coming!

101, is a new national non-emergency phone number for the police. It will be rolled out in England and Wales between July 2011 and January 2012.

The intention is to:

bullet

Provide the public with a memorable number where they can report crime and anti-social behaviour that does not require an emergency response.

bullet

Reduce pressure on the 999 system, allowing us to prioritise the most urgent calls for help.

Calls will be managed by West Mercia's call handlers in our Force Control Room.

Look out for more information coming soon!
